Hurricane Irene Update
We are in Marsh Harbor in the Abacos, Bahamas. Irene is expected to pass directly above us tomorrow, Thursday, sometime in the afternoon and into the night. It may strengthen to a category four hurricane by the time it reaches us.
We had moments of high winds and rain earlier today as feeder bands passed overhead.
At this hour, nearly midnight, we can hear strong winds from our hotel room, but nothing dangerous yet. The building does not shake and the coconuts are not yet flying.
We are on the third floor of a four story cement block building; the construction looks rather thick. The building is set back a good throw from the Sea of Abaco, on a bluff several meters above sea level.
While we are close to the water, our elevation and position on the third floor gives us protection from a flooding storm surge.
My only real concern is collapse of the building, which I think is rather unlikely.
I’ll post another update in the morning, hopefully with a picture or video.
